According to a report from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, cyber attacks targeting the NFC (contactless transaction) feature on Android devices — aimed at draining bank accounts — increased 188 percent in the first four months of 2025 compared to the same period the previous year.
According to the report as relayed by Cumhuriyet, the attacks are carried out through malicious software that activates when users bring their smartphones close to payment terminals. Using this method, attackers can gain direct access to the victim's card information and bank accounts.
Kaspersky warned Android users not to download apps from unknown sources, to disable NFC when not in use, and to enable two-factor authentication in mobile banking apps. Given that contactless payment use in Turkey has expanded rapidly in recent years, the findings carry critical importance for Turkish users.
