The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has detained photographer Bennu Gerede under an ex officio obscenity investigation launched under Article 226 of the Turkish Penal Code, based on his description of a necklace around his neck as a "portable vibrator" during a YouTube program he participated in.
The investigation was opened directly by the prosecutor's office; there is no complainant. Gerede was reported to have been detained for questioning.
Earlier this year, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had issued an arrest warrant against Fatma Soydaş under Article 216/3 of the Turkish Penal Code on charges of insulting religious values due to her social media posts; the Ankara 5th Criminal Court of Peace also imposed access restrictions on Soydaş's accounts. The Gerede case emerged at a time when prosecutors' ex officio initiatives targeting social media and broadcast content have intensified.
