Discount goes to treasury, not pumps: The 4.35 TL per-liter cost advantage created by falling global oil prices is expected to be collected as Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) from midnight tonight, with no reflection in pump prices. Journalist Olcay Aydilek reported the development, which was published by Cumhuriyet Newspaper.
The same arrangement was previously applied to diesel; the cost reduction that emerged while keeping consumer prices stable was offset by a tax increase.
Current pump prices are as follows: In Istanbul's European Side, gasoline is 67.27 TL, diesel 80.01 TL; on the Anatolian Side, gasoline is 67.12 TL, diesel 79.87 TL. In Ankara, gasoline is 68.24 TL, diesel 81.14 TL; in Izmir, gasoline is 68.52 TL, diesel 81.41 TL. For a driver commuting twice daily between Şişli and Kadıköy consuming an average of 60-70 liters monthly, this 4.35 TL difference would mean approximately 260-305 TL in monthly savings — but this savings will not be realized.
