Three schools in one building in Konak: Parents protest to Ministry of Education

Students of Melih Özakat Primary School, which was evacuated due to earthquake risk in Konak district of İzmir, and Salih İşgören Primary School, whose building was demolished, were transferred to Gazi Middle School building at the start of the new school year. In the three schools brought together under one roof, classrooms are straining under 50 students, while parents described fears that particularly young children are getting lost in the crowds as they leave school.

It was known that these schools transferred in Konak due to earthquake damage had been managed with similar temporary solutions in previous periods, but the buildings were not ready by the start of the new school year.

Behram Kaya, Chairman of the Izmir Branch of the All Student Parents Solidarity Association, appealed to the Ministry of Education, demanding that the demolished schools be constructed by the start of the school year, that overcrowded classrooms be addressed, and that personnel and hygiene problems be solved. Kaya also criticized the diversion of the agenda away from education problems toward debates such as 'mixed education'.

No official statement regarding capacity and temporary settlement plans was issued by the Izmir Directorate of National Education.
