Floods in the Peloponnese: Vehicles swept into sea, villagers relocated to sports halls

Heavy rainfall struck the Peloponnese: in the village of Karavostasi in Mani province, parked automobiles were swept into the sea by floodwaters, while the villages of Kokkala, Alipa, and Itilo also suffered severe damage. The Anadolu Agency cited local media reports based on Greek news agency AMNA.

Mani Deputy Mayor Yeorgia Lirofoni told AMNA that numerous homes and shops were flooded, and roads and bridges sustained serious damage. Lirofoni said residents seeking to spend the night safely were relocated to sports halls in undamaged neighboring areas.

Greece's Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced on X that a woman in the village of Itilo was injured after being struck by lightning while inside a vehicle.

According to data from Greece's Meteorological Department, wind speeds reached 112 kilometers per hour at Mount Penteli; 107 kilometers per hour was recorded in the Karystos district of Euboea, and 104 kilometers per hour on Tinos. In the Peloponnese, villages in the Mani district were among those where infrastructure rehabilitation work remained incomplete following the 2021 fire season.
