BYD Plant in Uzbekistan Targets 500,000 Vehicles Annually
Joint venture in Djizzakh will undergo three expansion phases worth up to $960 million and create up to 10,000 jobs.
BYD Uzbekistan Factory in Djizzakh plans to increase annual production to 500,000 vehicles through the second and third phases of project development.
The first phase, worth $160 million, has already launched: the facility is designed for 50,000 hybrid and electric vehicles annually, currently producing 12 automobiles per hour, or 100 per day. The second phase ($300 million) will increase capacity to 200,000 units, the third ($500 million) to 500,000. Upon completion of all three phases, the number of jobs could reach 10,000; the plant currently employs more than 1,500 people.
Shavkat Alimov, deputy general director of BYD Uzbekistan Factory, reported that the facility occupies 27 hectares in a special economic zone. The company has requested an additional 60 hectares for construction of a second plant with a capacity of 150,000 vehicles annually.
$40 million has been invested in the welding shop; during the first phase, 40 robots were installed, with the number subsequently exceeding 100. Each body undergoes approximately 5,000 welding points. Last year, a second welding line worth over $8 million was launched with 24 new robots. The paint shop, spanning 7,800 square meters, cost $29 million and is designed for 50,000 bodies annually; the assembly line, spanning 16,000 square meters, cost $26 million. The measurement laboratory received $1 million in investment: Hexagon equipment inspects each body with 20-micron precision across 2,300 points on the Song Plus model.
The plant produces the BYD Song Plus Champion DM-i and BYD Chazor DM-i through full production cycles; the BYD Yuan Up model is assembled using the modular method. By year-end, the company expects to export vehicles worth $50 million — primarily to Kazakhstan, where BYD has opened official dealer centers and sold over 3,000 vehicles last year.
The project began in January 2024 during Uzbekistan's president's visit to China.
