According to Nikkei Asia, North Korea is experiencing significant economic growth thanks to the war in Ukraine. The DPRK, in violation of international sanctions, is expanding exports and strengthening economic ties with Russia.
Cooperation between the two countries brings substantial income to Pyongyang and allows it to circumvent years-long trade restrictions.
North Korea is obtaining currency, energy resources and raw materials by supplying Russia with ammunition and labour, allowing the regime to circumvent international sanctions and strengthen its economy. The war in Ukraine has effectively become a tool for Pyongyang to break out of isolation and boost military-industrial potential.
The strengthening of North Korea's economy and armaments through the Ukrainian conflict is shifting the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region, which will complicate denuclearization negotiations and increase the risk of escalation on the Korean Peninsula. If the sanctions regime is not strengthened, the war in Ukraine could be prolonged — Kim's regime has gained an economic incentive to continue supporting Russia.
