Russia debuted the new cruise missile 'Geran-5' during a scaled-down Victory Day parade on Red Square in Moscow. The weapon was shown for the first time in a video broadcast, as physical military hardware was not displayed at the parade.
According to Defense Express, the missile is equipped with a jet engine and represents a development of the cruise missile family.
Russia has for the first time showcased the Geran-5 cruise missile — a cheap alternative to conventional cruise missiles based on the Iranian Karrar with a range of up to 1000 km and a warhead of 90 kg. The new weapon demonstrates a serious threat to Ukrainian air defenses due to its speed of 600 km/h and ability to carry air defense missiles for intercepting countermeasure systems.
The emergence of a cheap cruise missile capable of mass production complicates the defense of Ukrainian infrastructure and critical facilities, increasing the risk of damage to power systems and logistics. For the region, this means Russia's growing potential to strike at greater range with lower costs, which affects the cost and availability of electricity in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
