Ukraine Develops AI-Powered Turrets to Defend Against Drones

Ukraine has developed and deployed artificial intelligence-controlled turrets for shooting down enemy drones, using fiber-optic cables, according to Militarnyi.

The new system is an automated weapon capable of detecting and striking unmanned aerial vehicles with minimal reaction delay. Fiber-optic control channels provide high resistance to radio interference and electromagnetic effects — a significant advantage in modern warfare, where both sides actively employ electronic warfare measures.

The development is a direct response to Russia's massive use of kamikaze drones and strike unmanned aerial vehicles to target Ukrainian infrastructure and residential areas. The use of fiber optics instead of traditional radio control channels reduces the system's vulnerability to signal jamming by the adversary.

According to the publication, the turrets can be deployed both in active combat zones and at critical facilities in the rear — to protect urban areas, energy infrastructure, and military positions. The system reflects Ukraine's growing emphasis on integrating artificial intelligence technologies into the country's defense sector.
