19-year-old Arif Tosun drowns at restricted beach in Kandıra Kumcağız while attempting to rescue his sister
Tragedy struck the beach in Kandıra district of Kocaeli on Tuesday morning: the sister was rescued, but the brother could not be saved.

On Tuesday morning at Kumcağız Beach in Kandıra district of Kocaeli, a woman entered the water despite a ban on swimming due to rough sea conditions and strong currents. When 19-year-old Arif Tosun saw his sister in danger of drowning, he immediately jumped into the sea to try to rescue her; however, he was caught by strong currents between the waves.
Bystanders who arrived at the scene pulled both people ashore. Following initial aid at the scene, both the sister and brother were transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital. Despite intensive efforts, Arif Tosun could not be saved and died; his sister's treatment continued at the hospital.
It is recalled that similar drowning cases have occurred at Kumcağız Beach under comparable conditions in the past, and complaints about the lack of a permanent lifeguard station in the area have periodically surfaced. Authorities were reported to have launched an investigation into the incident.
