Vice-chairman election in Etimesgut goes to second round, AKP fielded no candidate
YENİ Party and CHP are competing for the seat of Beşikçioğlu, who was detained in the July 30 operation by Ankara's Western Chief Prosecutor's Office.
The Etimesgut Municipal Council convened today to elect a vice-chairman to replace Mayor Erdal Beşikçioğlu, who was detained in a July 30 operation by Ankara's Western Chief Prosecutor's Office; in the first round, no candidate secured the required majority and the election proceeded to a second round.
In the first round, where 41 votes were cast, 6 votes came back blank and 6 were abstentions; among the 29 valid votes, there was no decisive difference between YENİ Party candidate Memet Özdemir and CHP candidate Seda Dilber. The Cumhur İttifakı, which holds 12 seats, fielded no candidate.
In the operation, 55 people were taken into custody, 40 were detained, and on August 3 the Interior Ministry removed the mayor from office as a precautionary measure. Etimesgut is a district won by the CHP in both the 2019 and 2024 elections; this time the seat will be determined by the council's arithmetic.
