According to TRT Haber, Mustafa Günay, the CHP mayor of the Güzelbahçe district in Izmir, was detained and subsequently formally arrested in connection with a bribery investigation. Also arrested in the same investigation was Özgür Bayraktar, the Urban Planning and Development Director of Güzelbahçe Municipality.
Sözcü also confirmed the arrests. The investigation is reported to cover building permits and bribery allegations. Güzelbahçe is a district of Izmir on the Aegean coast with a population of approximately 30,000.
Günay's arrest has left a leadership vacuum at the municipality. Bribery investigations targeting local administrations have become an increasingly prominent issue on Turkey's political agenda. The prosecutor's office has yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the details of the investigation or the length of pre-trial detention.
