Two TIP Students Arrested After Hanging Banner at Kadıköy High School
Nevin Tekin and Nehir Dizdar, who hung a banner before Education Minister Yusuf Tekin's visit, were remanded into custody on allegations of threatening the minister.
Two students affiliated with the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), Nevin Tekin and Nehir Dizdar, were arrested after hanging a banner on the school wall of Kadıköy High School ahead of Education Minister Yusuf Tekin's visit. The two students, aged 19 and 20, were remanded into custody by the peace criminal court on allegations of threatening the minister.
Nehir's mother, Zübeyde Duran Dizdar, described the night of detention on Sözcü TV's main news program: "Two carloads of police came to the door at half past one in the morning," and recounted how six officers lined up on the stairs before taking her daughter away.
Attorney Uğurcan Demirci explained that his clients' cell assignments were determined in the afternoon, which prevented visits. Demirci stated that they expected to appeal for release by Monday, adding that sending two young women of this age into detention on the grounds that they "could threaten the honorable minister" was an application of law he had not seen before.
Demirci noted that he visited detained Istanbul Contemporary Jurists Association President Ezgi Önalan while entering attorney consultation at the courthouse. Families waiting outside learned that the next open visiting day would fall on Monday.
