autocorrelation
A statistical measure of how closely a market, economic indicator, or data series resembles its own past values over time. When returns or prices are autocorrelated, yesterday's movement predicts today's with more than random chance. Central banks and sovereign wealth funds increasingly scrutinize autocorrelation in inflation data and currency moves to distinguish genuine trends from noise, particularly relevant as Gulf and CIS economies navigate commodity-price cycles.
“Analysts warned that the positive autocorrelation in Turkish inflation readings meant a single good month was unlikely to signal a durable turning point.”
Etymology · From Greek 'autos' (self) plus Latin 'correlatio' (mutual relation); the statistical concept was formalized in the early 20th century through the work of British statistician George Udny Yule.
